Nicole Nigro (she|they|we)

b. 1981. Nigro is a 3rd generation settler in kanata (Canada). She is an international dance|theatre artist, facilitator, and mother, currently based in Berlin. Nigro is a graduate of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre (CA), holds an Honours BFA from York University (CA), a Diploma in Dance Teaching Studies with The Royal Academy of Dance (UK), and an MFA with Accademia dell’Arte (IT) and Mississippi University for Women (US).

She has had the privilege of interpreting as a guest artist with Anandam Dancetheatre (CA), Broken Jump Theatre (IT), The Danny Grossman Dance Company (CA), Divadlo Continuo (CZ), Dance Theatre David Earle (CA), Die Wolke Art Group (GR), Diyar Dance Theatre (PSE), Maré Hieronimus Dance Art (US), Peggy Baker Dance Projects for Nuit Blanche (CA), Stand Up Dance (DE) and several independent choreographers. Her work has been presented in Canada, the United States, Europe, Mexico, and the Middle East. She was a longtime faculty member at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre’s General School and Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre (CCDT), as well as the Artistic Director of CCDT’s Core Apprentice Company. Nigro is a member of the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists and the Dancer Transition Resource Centre. She has been a residency artist at Ponderosa (DE); Rechenzentrum Potsdam (DE); Altes Finanzamt (DE); Artscape (CA); Earthdance (US); La Macina di San Cresci (IT); Kulturfactory (IT); and Švestkovy Dvur (CZ).

Nigro’s performative work interlaces her interests in behaviour, sensory perception, language, connection, and liminality. Rooted in explorations of effort, memory, motivation, and intuition, she examines the contact between body, voice, and space, creating performance installations, which are a synthesis of her dance, somatic, vocal, and physical theatre practices.

In June of 2016, Nigro relocated to Europe to pursue an MFA in Physical Theatre. The 2.5-year graduate program took place in Italy, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Nigro has been coming to Berlin to study, research, and create since 2014 and is happy to finally call the city “home”. She continues to pursue projects on the international level as she believes in the collective humanity born from cultural exchange.
